Facebook Founders: More Work, Less Sex

This is exactly what was to be expected: Whenever the media now report on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg or other founding members, David Fincher's next feature film about the origins of the site is sure to be brought up. Free publicity then, ain't it?

In a recent statement reacting to the first full trailer for the "The Social Network" Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz stated "that the company’s beginnings had a lot more work and a lot less sex" than depicted in the trailer. As all fictionalizations, he claims, the filmmakers were emphasizing things that didn't matter and leaving out people who really did contribute. Interestingly, Moskovitz names the Winklevoss twins as an example of "things that didn't matter": while these two claimed they had invented Facebook and Zuckerberg stole the idea from them -- which sounds like that would be a big deal.

A video of Mark Zuckerberg expressing "distaste" for Fincher's film portrayal of the events can be found here. It's the D8 Conference interview with Zuckerberg, nearly one hour long and consisting mostly of the two interviewers frying him on the privacy issue. What's stunning about this is (if like myself you have never seen Zuckerberg talk before) what a great job Jesse Eisenberg is doing impersonating the social network founder.

"At the end of the day, they cannot help but portray him as the driven, forward-thinking genius that he is. And the Ad Board *does* owe him some recognition, dammit."

– Dustin Moskovitz

As long as Mark Zuckerberg is alive and causing controversy, it appears the media will keep pumping a lot of attention towards Fincher's fall release.

Speaking of clever marketing: Sony has just released a first TV spot for the film, featuring Kanye West's "Power". How appropriate. Enjoy:

  1. Very cool post, thanks. There's another movie revolving around Facebook coming out: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/catfish/

Seems interesting, in the beginning the trailer doesn't look like a thriller at all...

  2. At what point during the interview does Zuckerberg express distaste for the movie?

  3. I love this spot, I actually like this better than the theatrical trailer, since I am not terribly in love with the "Creep" part at the beginning. Cool, thanks.
