Fincher's Next Move?

+++ UPDATE 03/18/2010 +++
I just noticed that IMDB has updated David Fincher's profile page, and guess what: PAWN SACRIFICE, that Bobby Fisher chess-drama bio-pic, is now listed as in pre-production, with David Fincher directing, aiming at a 2013 release date. If nothing else: That was quick!

So it's that time of year again: Fincher is post-producing his facebook movie The Social Network and pondering what to do next. Last friday Fincher's name popped up to the tune of an adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Now Variety reports that Fincher may team again with Columbia Pictures: for a chess drama called "Pawn Sacrifice".

Based on a script by Steve Knight (Eastern Promises), the movie is rumored to star Tobey Maguire as Bobby Fischer, the only American ever to win the Chess World Championship. The script re-tells Fischer’s against-the-odds victory over long time Russian champ Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Title tournament.

Fincher's name was among an A-list of directors and won Columbia's preference thanks to their collaboration on The Social Network. And as the article impressively states: Fincher is the first and only director with final cut privilege at Columbia Pictures!

Another opportunity for Mr. Fincher to make his own political movie and compete with classics like All the President's Men, The Manchurian Candidate...
