Goon Script Ready

Eric Powell told ComicBookResources.com about the current state of affairs of his comic book series "The Goon". And of course he made a mention of the film adaptation helmed by Blur Studios -- and David Fincher.

"I just finished writing the script a few months back, and Blur is working on a lot of test stuff. Fincher is working on a film right now, so we're waiting for him to get some space so we can start showing some of this stuff off. I'm pretty happy with everything so far. We've just got to work to get to the next point. This is a slow, long process."

At this point it seems most likely that Fincher will remain attached to the project as a producer, or to put it another way: With more than five other projects on his development slate, there is a rather slim chance that this will be Fincher's follow-up directing gig after "The Social Network". However, "David's going to be heavily involved,” Powell says. “I've worked with him and Blur quite a bit to get the screenplay together, and it's been a great experience so far."

I am not a comic book fan, so I don't know what's going on and I don't know this "Goon" series in particular. But in the article it says, Powell has created a comic book that contains no dialogue at all, only thought bubbles. Sounds like a very clever and interesting concept. So while you are at it, and in case you are a fan of the series or just curious, you can pick up The Goon #33 on newsstands (or here), November 25th:

"The Goon goes to the dentist and finds out that the receptionist has been replaced by a sentient manatee! And the Goon hates manatees! So he punches it! The dentist doesn't like that so he kicks Goon out. Leaving him with the dilemma of how to eat candy apples with a sore tooth. Then aliens show up."

Sounds like quite the story.

  1. The Goon is a pretty good comic, but it contains dialogue. It's not really breaking boundaries. Maybe the most recent issue is all done in thought bubbles, but usually it's just a well done regular comic. Very pulp stuff.

  2. Indeed, The Goon comic book series is a regular comic. But it seems Powell created a strictly no dialogue edition for #33. He says,

"I thought it would be funny to do a comic with nothing but thought balloons. I think it was more work to do that than it would have been to fill the book with words because I had to do drawings inside the thought balloons! (...) For me, it's about the fact that you've got to do what you find interesting... I'm a big believer in 'less is more'."

Fantastically, there's even an exclusive preview page on CBR, and the concept, in my opinion, does look very interesting.
