New Fincher Commercial: iPhone - 3Gs

He said, he wanted to sleep for six months. But unless this ad was shot last summer, back to back with Fincher's other iPhone ad, I guess those were empty words... Uhm, good for us...

The first thing I thought, when I saw this was, oh my, that's what MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 could have looked like, if Fincher had done it. Haha. Just kidding. It's a neat little break in story, a well done run of fingers from the man. Always good to see a Fincher commercial.

Thanks to everyone for swamping me with links, credits and info!

  1. Anybody else think this is pretty similar to Steven Soderberghs style for the Ocean's Series? Not to mention - Fincher uses the same Musical Artist to compose the music for the commercial as Soderbergh does to score all three of the oceans films?

  2. comments on slashfilm and on cinematical (just to point a few) are pretty hateful, saying the commercial is lame and whatnot. i really don't get all the hate towards a simple commercial. it's sleak, well edited, carries the "product message" across and still has a good production value. i agree is not the best ad in the world, far from that... but i think it's because it's fincher that somehow people think him or the universe owns them something. or maybe people just really love their iphones. ; )

and i also think that fincher has a very particular style and although i can see why people think it has similarities with ocean's eleven (i don't), the camera work, editing and even music cues (with a different composer, of course) used in this commercial were in full display in fight club, for example. for me, it's just a coincidence.

  3. "Now with video". It's not bad, it's horrible. Apple sells a phone with video camera as its new invention. Come on! Not slick. Not new. Not clever. The way the commercial is shot, is by the numbers, nothing special. It's not Fincher's part, I guess it's the concept of the ad that pisses people off. The product ain't as hot as they would like it to be. And Mission:Impossible spoofs were lame years ago. Epic fail.

  4. What is the song's name, and why is it so hard to post a comment all of a sudden??

  5. Actually... posting comments shouldn't have become "harder" at all. The only thing I changed, was to embed the POST A COMMENT field directly below the posts as opposed to a separate window.

And as a sidenote to all: For the sake of a more direct and faster communication, I have decided to have comments be published immediately from now on, without previous moderation. Spam and unnecessarily foul entries will still be removed.

That should make it as easy as it gets.

  6. I don't really like the commercial either... I've seen FAR better than that, that's why I wondered if it's really by Fincher first. What I didn't like:

    - color grading is off

    - the blue floor and the green of the camera look cheesy and distracting (the green overlay could've been done by anyone with photoshop and motion)

    - is it just me, or does the whispering of the guy sound out of scene and not correctly sound mixed?

    - it's too bright when the light goes on; compare it to the lighting in the first iphone commercial... the lighting in this ad is just off

    - the animation on the iphone with the snorkle lens looks cheesy... like the lens is an animated 2d picture

    - the actor of the apple lab doesn't fit

    - the iphone in the last shot has strange proportions, it looks like a multitouch tablet, bigger than an iphone and distorted, and again, the lighting is too bright

I did like the editing and the camera moves though.

PS. What Fred meant was that one has to click on "Post Comment" or "Preview" twice before it gets processed, first one gets the message "Your request could not be processed. Please try again." Thanks for making it easier to post though!

  7. This commercial isn't that impressive for me. Unless the actors are actually 3d animated.

  8. This whole commercial was actually made on an iPhone, is the part that people seem to be missing. Fincher did it all himself using iPhotoshop and iFinal Cut Pro, all while standing in line at In-N-Out Burger.

  9. Yeah that makes sense! How could I not see this!? Damn! Fincher is such a genius, he can even make professional commercials with an iPhone and pocket the whole budget of 200'000$ for himself... now THAT'S genius!
