David Fincher: Interviews / Update

Just to let you know and just in time for Christmas: In the summer many of you had expressed an interest in the Fincher interviews collection -- if only it came as a paperback edition. Well, after some initial scramble the publisher has finally come through on his announcement. A paperback edition is now available for about half prize of the hardcover.

  4. Don't know if you all have been keeping up with the Sony leaks but there was a interesting little email leaked that Fincher sent about the JOBS movie he was previously attached to. Of course having read the email it makes me wish he was still doing it, and it's just amazing to see him begin to break down he would approach the material. Here's what he wrote:

"[JOBS] Is great. It’s a play, but a really quicksilver, cinematic one.
I would think you would want to cast and rehearse very carefully (couple months)
Shoot very quickly (4 or 5 weeks — 8 days per ACT??)
The venues would be easy (we could probably find them all in town)
Editing is where we would spend time.
Can SONY market a ONE MAN SHOW(?)
Can you guys make the LENNY of it all, the MUST SEE?"

  5. It's all hideously compelling trash! The Rudin vs Pascal stuff makes one astonished that GDT ever even got made. And stone-cold-kills any hopes for a sequel; which I, personally, mourn.
"Can you guys make the LENNY of it all" = priceless Fincher.

  6. "There are a ton of email correspondences back-and-forth between Angelina Jolie and Rudin and Pascal about her planned Cleopatra biopic, and who should direct it. One email from Jolie to the pair dated May 15, 2014, and in response to a list of potential directors, reads, “Do we know who on the list is actually available to begin prep in next few months? I do think [Tomas] alfredson is great. I also think we could have another talk with Fincher who may be difficult but is brilliant and already engaged.
Xxx”

To this, Scott Rudin responds, “‘May be difficult’?!?!
Like Hitler ‘may be anti-Semitic’!!!

I think a lot of these guys are free around our time-frame --- who do you like?”

  7. I really hope Fincher doesn't do Cleopatra. It's feels like a flop. In another email Amy Pascal writes how she wants to terminate Rudin's contract with Sony but try to retain the rights to Dragon Tattoo. I think Rudin bought the rights to the books so I doubt the sequels will get made with them fighting. To be honest I don't really want the other movies to be made. The other books were pretty weak and it's been too long since the first movie.

  8. But I think Fincher knows that about the other books, as does Zaillian, and the script he fashioned seemed to be an improvement on the books. Or at least Fincher seemed positive about it, the last thing I read. I suppose there is no reason why Rudin, as with jobs, couldn't take the sequel elsewhere, but it has the pallor of death over it now. And not in a good way!

  9. Guys! I was seriously like 3 feet away from Fincher yesterday! it was so brief (didn't even get to speak to him), but incredible to see the man in the flesh and within hand shaking distance!

Have any of you ever seen the Finch out in nature before?

  16. So I've listened to Fincher "Gone Girl" commentary. It's even funnier than the movie :P Right off the bat he starts with:

"So one of the things during the editing that we became profoundly aware of is the need for Regency Pictures to get a new logo."

    LOL.

And there's much more but I won't spoil it :) My favorite one is about a scene that only took two takes ;)

  17. Is it terrible of me to admit that I'm really relishing 'watching' the commentary track more than re-watching the movie? :O
Saw it 3 times in the cinema and enjoyed, admired, awed, etc, by it. But after 3rd view I didn't get that much more from it than 1st; which is very unusual for a Fincher picture. Like, super-very. Probably more to do with my headspace than the movie ~ just not as open to things in last few months as before.
But having read sneak 'peeks' of this commentary, and given the various promos Fincher did for GG, I cannot wait to sit down and spend a couple of hours with DF in full yak mode. To me, he is at the top of his game, intellectually, right now, in terms of his awareness & understanding of his craft & process. It sounds like he had a blast with this track (the fact that pic was a palpable HIT! must help). I'm hoping to have it by this weekend.
On a side-note, I would pay good money to read/see/hear a joint interview/commentary track with Fincher & Soderbergh. The 2 sharpest talkers/thinkers shooting movies today. Somebody please make this happen in 2015!

    1. I'm sure you will enjoy it. If it was up to me I would love to hear him talk about more technical stuff (more about lenses, sound, editing, vfx. I hope special features on the Blu-ray will cover all of this stuff) He spends a lot of time talking about his actors and the story. But it's still a fantastic listen.

"To me, he is at the top of his game, intellectually, right now, in terms of his awareness & understanding of his craft & process."

      I agree 100% :) And I hope this continues.

      More recognition for Team Fincher:

Writers Guild Nomination, Best Adapted Screenplay - Gillian Flynn
Producers Guild Nomination - Ceán Chaffin
Art Directors Guild Nomination, Contemporary Film - Donald Graham Burt
Costume Designers Guild, Contemporary Film - Trish Summerville

    2. What should happen is DF does 4 separate yak-tracks! ~ as with the 'Se7en' New Line Platinum version; each track tackling separate elements of the film. I could listen to him talk tech forever, but his solo commentary tracks lately tend towards actor/story elements. This is probably indicative of the shift in 'late Fincher'. He is still in as complete control of the tech stuff as he was back on 'Alien3', but in recent times ('Zodiac' onwards) has displayed a growing & consumate obsession with honing performance and script elements.
So do you believe that there will be a features-packed Blu-Ray of 'Gone Girl' further down the line?

      Delete
    3. There must be one. I mean come on, it's his biggest hit :) There should be like a three-disc release with, like you said, separate commentary tracks (1. Director 2. Director & Writer 3. Actors 4. Editor & Sound & Music 5. Cinematography & Production Design & Costumes - That would be optimal for me :P ). And a shit load of features on the other disks ;) Adobe should make a four-hour documentary about how Premiere Pro was first used to edit a major motion picture ;)

What can I say, he really spoiled us with all those special editions :P Maybe it will happen when the new 4K Blu-ray players hit the stores.

Yes. But for me that shift towards performance and story happened sometime around Benjamin Button, that movie must have been a real breakthrough. After that he is on a roll making perfectly balanced movies, where brilliant technical stuff doesn't get in the way of the story and acting.

  23. I'm currently listening on the commentary track. Would never have thought that there was a "fight" between Affleck and Fincher on set over the cap Nick wears in the airport. David says this in the commentary: "I really wanted it to be a Yankees cap. But beeing from Boston and not beeing very proffesional as an actor, Ben refused to wear a Yankees cap... It did not come to blows but we had to shut down production for four days as we negotiated with Patrick Whitesell [Ben's agent] over what would be the best thing for the movie..."

Actors... I'd eat a ebola sandwich if David told it was required in the scene...

    2. this kind of production wont bypass even a single day of principal photography just like that. but "four"...?

c'mon, guys -- it's fincher's humor, really. in another interview fincher revealed that him & affleck discussed the cap, but in tiny bits up until that day, that's all.

      eventually they could've use a non-descriptive cap. or a "mastermind" logo-ed one...

    3. Yes, quite obviously a joke. :) Very funny and great commentary, as always!

  24. So apparently Fincher, Flynn, and Affleck are teaming up again for a remake of Strangers on a Train. http://deadline.com/2015/01/ben-affleck-david-fincher-gillian-flynn-strangers-on-a-train-remake-warner-bros-gone-girl-1201348983/

Interesting, but this is easily two (or more) years away from being released since Fincher has two shows at HBO that are both nearing production.

    1. "The project will follow the track of an express train, despite Affleck’s busy schedule. He is clearing space to shoot Strangers between directing and starring in the Dennis Lehane novel adaptation Live By Night in the spring and starring in Justice League in 2016"

Hmmm, so that means they would shoot sometime around late 2015 and early 2016? I would love to see a new Fincher film so soon :)

The bitching about the remake already started. Strangers on a Train is a fine movie but still far from Hitchcock's best. The premise is fantastic but later the film falls flat. The tennis game scene and the finale on a carousel are corny as hell :P In my humble opinion of course ;) So there is room for remaking.

I'm not so sure about this part:

"Affleck will play a movie star in the middle of a campaign for an Oscar during awards season whose private plane breaks down..."

He wouldn't even have to act! :P
