Red Sparrow

With "Gone Girl" going for its final cut some time soon, it's the beginning of a new season yet again: Speculation about what may not or may indeed be Fincher's next project. There's a host of just never dead enough films on the shelf, with most of us hoping "Rendezvous With Rama" will find any whatsoever way into our sphere of existence, "20,000 Leagues" sounds awesome on and off, and there are the potential "Dragon Tattoo" sequels. So how about one more...

Adding "House of Cards" to his sparkling resume, Fincher indeed seems a good tap for Fox's "Red Sparrow" — a modern day thriller circling around sexpionage, featuring none other than recent Fincher muse Rooney Mara.

"The story is set in present-day Russia, and Mara would play Russian intelligence officer Dominika Egorova, who struggles to survive in the post-Soviet intelligence jungle. Ordered against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress in the art of ‘sexpionage,’ Dominika is assigned to operate against Nathaniel Nash, a young CIA officer who handles the Agency’s most important Russian mole. The two begin a relationship that puts both of them, and a network of spies, in grave danger. Dominika winds up seeking revenge against her soulless masters, and living a fatal double life after she is recruited by the CIA to ferret out a high-level traitor in Washington." (Summary by Deadline).

Tempered with Fincher's unflattering look at behind-the-scenes politics and his grasp for the collective thematic undercurrent, this sounds indeed... promising? Well, let's just watch this play out for a while.

  3. Oooh, sweet. Both of those. Thank you!

Btw. do we know yet whether season 2 DVDs will include audio commentary — if not Netflix stumbled upon a clever business model...

That's why I'm not buying yet. I'll wait for the series finale and the complete series box set with the predictable additional extras.
