Rest In Peace: Harris Savides

Terrible news for all film lovers as it is reported DoP Harris Savides just died.

Cinematographer Adam Frisch posted this message on the Cinematography.com forum :
It's my very sad duty to report that Harris Savides has just died. Harris had been sick for awhile, but was as far as I know doing better. Don't know the final cause of death. Not only a brilliant DP and a true legend in his own time, but also by all accounts from people that knew him - a true gent.

Safe journey.

Savides was in my opinion the best cinematographer of his generation. His work on Zodiac and The Game was memorable and transcended Fincher's vision.

What he achieved on Glazer's masterpiece Birth is simply mesmerizing. I am, we are, very very sad to loose him.

  1. This is very sad news, indeed. Savides had also worked with Fincher on one of my favorite music videos ever, A Perfect Circle's "Judith".

    Rest in peace.

  6. Oh man... I don't even know what to say, this is just depressing. An elite craftsman & artist, that created some of the most stunning images... I've ever seen. Thank you for that Mr. Savides and rest is peace.

  8. A real tragedy; first and foremost for his family of course. But also for film art ~ walking around today remembering with joy all the sublime images which he brought to life and then realising with pain that we will never again see new images from the man.
A loss comparable with Jordan Cronenweth's from the previous generation.
Such a diverse body of work ~ from the films he made with Gus van Sant ('Last Days' would be my favourite, but they are all stunningly photographed films) to the magnificent 'The Yards', to 'Birth' (arguably his greatest work) to his excellent work with Fincher (including the 'Se7en' titles) not to mention his superlative music video and commercial work (NIN 'Closer', Madonna 'Rain', Coldplay 'Speed of Sound' to name just three of his best)

As Gould stated above ~ the finest cinematographer of his generation. And he's just gone. A brutal day.
