Side by Side: The Girls With The Dragon Tattoos

Fandor set out to "compare a Scandinavian hit movie and its Hollywood remake". Which is of course misleading insofar as I am dead-certain Fincher has not for a moment set out to "remake" Niels Arden Oplev's movie, but was plainly interested in creating his own adaptation of the novel. Nit-picking much there? Meh, possible. And regardless, I do think this is a splendid idea: to analyse how two filmmakers approach and cineastically reiterate the same source material. I liked the swedish films a lot, yet overall I am more inclined towards Fincher's adaptation. Prolly not the biggest of surprises...

“One thing that’s so cool about the title sequence is that you have these beautiful, iconic shots of Washington, but you also have these incredibly prosaic images like the barrel on the river,” Beal said. “One of the cool things [Fincher] did visually at the end was, some of the daytime shots, he actually had people go through frame by frame and paint out all the people. … It feels even more ghostly.”

What's the relation between this "Twin Peaks" soundtrak track and David Fincher?

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ4RMGZmLTs

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This track is the music to the quite famous scene in the 8th episode of the 2nd season, "Louise Dombrowski, in the shadows, dancing on a hook rug with a flashlight".

Louise Dombrowski is played by David's sister, Emily Fincher. "Twin Peaks" was produced by "Propaganda Films" and Emily worked there as the producer Gregg Fienberg's assistant. The episode was directed by Caleb Deschanel and apparently, this scene wasn't originally in the script and was improvised on the set.

  30. More CPR...?
Having 'lost' Probst as dp on 'Mindhunter', Fincher reverted to his previous form of promoting his gaffers to shooters and so Mr Erik Messerschmidt is now director of photography on the show, or 5 episodes at least (Chris Probst shot 2).
Next ~ a 'Mindhunter' extra posted a short video about his life on set (apparently he is a 'vlogger'?!) He aint exactly David Prior...but we do get a little hot monitor action, and it's quite funny to see how soul destroying a Fincher set can be! And, of course, the video was pulled within the week (man, that set is tight...which kind of explains just why it is so dead in Fincherland right now); But here it is anyway. The password for the video is: impala.

And last, but not least, a hearty recommendation. I recently had cause to come across a film that i had never even heard of before, that, if you are a fan of 'Se7en' or at least the visual patina of 'Se7en', i would strongly urge you to track down & view. It is called 'The Nickel Ride' and it was shot in 1974. Now, i have never seen it mentioned or referenced in any way in relation to 'Se7en', as a possible stylistic influence; to these eyes, it is a far greater progenitor than something like 'The French Connection', whose influence - outside of the kinetics of the Doe chase - i've never really got. The look of 'The Nickel Ride' is all over the whole of 'Se7en' - it helps that it is set & shot in alot of the downtown Los Angeles locales that 'Se7en' shot in, some of them remarkably unaltered. It comes as little surprise then to note that the dp was Jordan Cronenweth, whose Fincher connections are legion and intimate. (The film was also written by Eric Roth). I could wax long & lyrical about the melancholy beauty of this film (a "sunshine noir" as one critic put it) but it is best if you just get ahold of the dvd and watch it. Now. And if you're smitten, get ahold of the March 1974 issue of 'American Cinematographer' for a cool Croneneweth set visit.
    Keep on keeping on.

  39. Indeed he is.
i long for the day that SS & DF record a Blu-Ray/4K UHD audio commentary track for a film; i don't care what. It could be 'Baby's Day Out' and i would still listen to the damn thing. They are bar none the best 'shooter talkers' on film i've ever heard. The combination of both would be mind-blowing.
And it's still very cool that each scopes the other's work as it evolves {incidentally does Mindhunter (2) mean SS has seen 2 eps, or just watched 1 twice?! If i'm reading correctly, he may very well have seen 8 x Mindunters to date...i think we is due a teaser).
And colour me stoked for 'Logan Lucky'. SS loves his heist pictures (who doesn't?) and in the week prior to starting shooting on his new one at the end of May he imbibes 'Heat', 'The Hot Rock' & 'Le Mans', plus 'GDT' for some Daniel Craig heft. 'LL' is a heist/NASCAR pic, so those 3 movies are pretty much the perfect start to shooting! {In case you've somehow missed out on the joy that is 'The Hot Rock' ~ it's the greatest 70s heist/caper/Redford flick you've never seen. It is a better Peter Yates film than 'Bullitt'. It is what Soderbergh wanted to make every time he made an Ocean film. It is...oh please just buy it ~ now. SS once said he watches it at least once a year, and he appears to be telling the truth).
In other 'MH' whispers, it would seem pretty much confirmed that there will be a second season for Netflix, with a micro-hint from the (current) dp that they are set fair for a third...
    Happy New Year :)
