EOnline - Notes on David Fincher

"Entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little medicine," Fincher says. "Some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything's okay. I don't make those kinds of movies.
Everything's not okay."

EOnline collected what they call "notes" on David Fincher. And they have about a ton of them. Most of these are from David's classic interviews, and they reveal a lot about David's directing approach, about his motivation for making movies and about how he sees the pains and thrills of moviemaking.

"You know, the best analogy for moviemaking is you're doing a watercolor from three blocks away through a telescope, with 40 people holding the brush, and you have a walkie-talkie."
(--Fincher to Fred Schruers, ROLLING STONE, 1997)

It's a very interesting read, summing up David most famous statements and insights. The only unfortunate thing about the EOnline notes really? -- A poor readability!

So here are two more of my favorite quotes ... before you head over there and read the entire notes section on the EOnline website!

"I like the initial design and rehearsal, all the possibilities. Then when you go to shooting, it's, 'We can't put a wide enough lens on,' or, 'We can't get the wall further back.' That's always so unpleasant and has not gotten any easier."
(--Fincher quoted in EMPIRE, November 1997)

And, what may be interesting for everyone who digs into David's earlier stuff -- David Fincher on his music video work:

"I just make these things and try to live them down. It's just creating a context for understanding a song. These are not windows into somebody's soul. For me, this is my film school, and, quite honestly, I'm embarrassed by a lot of my work."
(--Fincher to David Wild in ROLLING STONE, 1996)

Quite honestly, this statement makes me wonder, which of his videos he doesn't like, and which he thinks are truly amazing, even to his overcritical self! -- Guess we'll have to ask him some time soon ...

Jody Watley - Two Music Videos

During the summer of 1989, Watley's "Real Love" video, directed by David Fincher, was nominated for seven MTV Video Music Awards including Breakthrough Video, Best Art Direction, Best Dance Video, Best Female Video, Best Editing and of course ... -- Best direction!

A year earlier David had already worked with Jody Watley to create a beautiful black and white video for "Most of All".

Towards the end of the 1980s Jody Watley ranked at the very top of female artists, alongside Janet Jackson and Madonna. While her rivals still have more or less a household name status, Jody Watley isn't exactly famous any longer. However, she still ranks as one of MTV Video Music Awards most nominated female artist of all time (according to Wikipedia).

MOST OF ALL (1988)
This videos feature a ton of nice photographic ideas and a superb and very classy look. My personal favorite in this is the very last shot. Watch out for that one -- to me, that's what makes it a real Fincher ...:

Zodiac - San Francisco Chronicle Podcast

San Francisco Chronicle's Daniel King conducted some very personal interviews with one of the lead inspectors on the case and a former Chronicle reporter who received a letter from the killer. On the SFC website you can listen to the podcast ...

These interviews date back to october 2005, when David Fincher's ZODIAC movie was still in pre-production. For this matter it focusses on the experiences of the two interviewees and how they remember the violence and terror of the Zodiac Killer.

For more backstory on the Zodiac case, listen to the podcast here:

The Outfield - Music Video Trilogy (1986 & 1987)

In 1986/87 David shot three promos for pop-rock band The Outfield. All three of these have a great mood and cinematography and are definitely worth a watch.

The only negative thing about the ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD video? Well, it has this strong mid-80s hairstyle thing going on.
Apart from that it's sweet and very beautifully shot.

Up next was EVERY TIME YOU CRY, which I saw for the first time just recently and it was immediately compelling: What starts out as a very beautifully staged live-performance in the course of the song expands to a epic spectacle of cosmic proportions -- breathtaking!

NO SURRENDER, released in 1987, sports some artfully done black and white shots and a visceral cinematic appeal.

Panic Room - Great Interview & Article

If you think about PANIC ROOM it might sound like a smooth shoot, involving a mere handful of actors and taking place all within one location. In reality the closely-confined thriller turned out to be a nerve-wrecking nightmare, partly due to a 100 day shooting schedule all taking place in the same studio. And then some.

Entertainment Weekly gets PANIC ROOM star Jodie Forster and helmer David Fincher to talk about the minor and major catastrophes happening behind the scenes:

Entertainment Weekly - "Cause for Alarm"

And if you are not only inspired by David's film, but inspired enough to want to become a filmmaker yourself, here's a very neat BONUS ARTICLE: David sharing some knowledge about your start in the business!

Entertainment Weekly - "David Fincher Interview"

Todd Doogan interviews David Fincher (2000)

Another classic interview with the mastermind behind FIGHT CLUB. This time it's Todd Doogan digging deep to excave some interesting facts and thought's from David's mind. And it sure is exciting ...

For example David talks in detail about how he got involved in FIGHT CLUB, his first reading experience, and the very moment he decided, that he wanted to do the film:

"I read it that night and I flipped out. I was laughing so hard that I just said to myself, "I've got to be involved in this. If anyone should make this movie, I should at least give it my best shot." (-- The Digital Bits)

I guess this is mainly intended for die-hard FIGHT CLUB fans, who just can't seem to soak up enough about this film! -- Enjoy:

Wire Train (1987) - Double Treat

These are two (mainly) performance videos David shot back in 1987 for the band WIRE TRAIN. For some reason "She Comes On" doesn't speak to me. But the other one definitely reminds of something ...

SHE COMES ON (1987)
Like I said: This one doesn't do it for me. It's a plain b/w performance video. Either I didn't get the point or it's simply not David best:

SHOULD SHE CRY (1987)
Now this was the one, I was talking about: In some odd way "Should She Cry" seems like the 80's poppy version of David's A PERFECT CIRCLE video"Judith". I guess it's mainly the color-timing, the setting and maybe a few camera angles that lead me to this. -- Anyway, think you'll enjoy this one:

Michael Jackson - "Who is it" (1993)

Back in 1991 Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and had the King of Music Videos, David Fincher, come in and shoot one hell of an amazing video ...

While the storyline of this Fincher classic isn't easy to understand (see these entries for explanations: Link 1, Link 2), the video is flawlessly shot, has extravagant lighting and cinematography, a perfect choice of lenses and perspective, wonderful editing -- it's simply an allround masterpiece!

"Gears of War" Rumor - Untrue

There has been a rumor going around for months, David had directed the latest GEARS OF WAR trailer for the XBOX. And while the trailer indeed is very appealing, the rumor ... well ... it's not entirely true:

The real director of the clip is a very talented JOSEPH KOSINSKI, who has garnered widespread acclaim for his other CGI and commercial works, including "Desert H2ouse" and "Apple Ispec".

David Fincher acted as a "creative consultant" on the project, and therefore it remains unclear in how far he was involved in the creation or direction of the spot. In my opinion, if you compare the styles of these two directors, it looks more like Joseph had the final hand on it.

For further info, as well as some stunning high quality version of this and other XBOX trailers, visit JOSEPH KOSINSKIs website:

The Hooters - "Johnny B" (1987)

Severe fandom may lead to overreactions and misinterpretations. I am aware of that. However, I just love to recognize these unique ways in which a director sees and shows things, and well -- ... especially so with the master, David Fincher.

In his 1987 video for "Johnny B" pay close attention to the very second shot, watch the trailer for ZODIAC right after that -- and tell me, it's not THE EXACT SAME BASEMENT SHOT?!! Once you get past the 80's haircuts in this one, you will see some more fincheresque trademarks, especially some very strong editing!

It seems to me, this song still gets a lot of airplay, although it never went higher than #61 on the Billboard Charts ... -- Amazing.

The Motels - "Shame" (1985)

Maybe I am too young: I have never heard of either this song nor the band! "Shame", as far as I researched it, was one of the last major hits The Motels had, hitting the TOP 40 single charts in 1985 and having a young David Fincher take the reigns of shooting a video.

If it wasn't for seeing David's beginnings as a director, this may not be interesting. It does have a few typical Fincher shots though, especially about 3 minutes into the song. Believe it or not, this video was nominated by AMERICAN VIDEO for "Best Video" of that year. You be the judge ...:

Panic Room - Visual Effects

As is common nowadays, visual effects work on feature films is done by several companies, sometimes up to a dozen or more. On 2002's PANIC ROOM french effects-cuisine BUF definitely got themselves the lion share: David's 3-minute signature shot of the camera travelling through the house!

On this site, the company displays some great screenshots of their work, and what's even more amazing, a MAKING OF video illustrating the visual effects wizardry that went into bringing David's one-shot vision to life.

The must-have PANIC ROOM 3-disc Special Edition DVD includes some further stunning visual effects, set design and sound-design featurettes. All goes to show you: This is a true masterpiece! David and his collaborators pulled off some amazing work and created a film, that ranges among the strongest cinematic achievements ever.

Buf-People, this rocks! A must for every Fincher fan:

And for everyone with heightened interests: BUF's website features and incredible collection of fx-driven commercials, music videos and feature film assignments you may just want to check out. Enjoy:

Fight Club - Visual Effects

Aside David's long-time collaborators from Digital Domain, french vfx-house BUF COMPAGNIE has contributed some amazing work to David's feature films FIGHT CLUB and PANIC ROOM. And what's best is, they keep an extravagant compendium of their works online ...!

On this page they illustrate their efforts on FIGHT CLUB, including some awe-inspiring screenshots and a very cool MAKING OF video.

We say "Merci!"! -- Check it out here:

George Michael - "Freedom '90" (1990)

Another one of David's must-know, must-see music videos:
George Micheal chose not to appear in his own video, which was probably much of a stun back in 1990, instead he jam-packed his clip with some of the most gorgeous girls alive ...

If you don't like the music, go for the girls: This clip has Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and unknown-but-hot german model Tatjana Patitz. If you don't like the girls either, go for the credits: At the annual VMAs this was one of the most nominated clips, including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing and of course ... Best Direction. (1991 VMAs)

And for true fincher-buffs this holds a tiny, but oh so precious special moment: Pay close attention to the opening shot of the video and be prepared to be stunned. This is 1990 and David already pulls off his signature PANIC ROOM shot; steering his 35mm camera right through the backrest of a chair. -- Awesome! I love that!

Rick Springfield at the Grindhouse

Two of David's very early works in a Grindhouse-style double-feature:
Rick Springfield's "Celebrate Youth" and "Dance This World Away".

CELEBRATE YOUTH (1985)
There's just no way around saying this: It's definitely an 80's song, but along with the video it plays out really well. Probably the strongest point about this video is David's use of color within a black/white environment, much like Steven Spielberg did it in "Schindler's List" -- ... almost ten years later, that was.

DANCE THIS WORLD AWAY (1985)

Being asked what his favorite music videos of all time would be, guess what Rick Springfield had to say:

"Yeah I loved 'Dance this World Away.' It was done by David Fincher. We filmed it up in San Francisco and it was the first video that he had done and he went on to do big multi-million dollar videos and then started directing Seven and Fight Club and all those movies but he was a young guy at a time (...) [This] video is rarely seen but it's still one of my favorite ones I've done." (-- Entertainment World's Interview)

And rightfully so! The video features incredibly dynamic editing and dwells on some of the same cynical and sociocritical themes as do SE7EN or FIGHT CLUB. It's a classic. Enjoy it here ...

Se7en - Comic Book Series

It certainly is a highly controversial idea, especially so among the cult-fans of David Fincher's 1995 instant classic "Se7en":
Zenescope Entertainment decided to publish a 7-part comic-book series based on the movie, further exploring the background of serial killer John Doe.

Judging by the artwork only (since I haven't read the comic-books) it looks as if the imagery and color palette captures a lot of the stylistic sense of the movie. This fact already might get one or the other fincherfanatic drooling!

The question remains, whether the stories can live up to the genius of the Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay.

Is this a must-have?
-- You decide!

Rolling Stones - "Love is Strong" (1994)

David's classic Stones clip premiered in july 1994 and again garnered him several awards, such as best music video and best special effects. A great showcase of his cinematic eye and talent for employing visual effects.

NY Times Article on the Contour System

The Contour System is the core technology behind creating the visual effects on David's latest: "The Curios Case of Benjamin Button", starring Brad Pitt, due for a May 2008 release.

The New York Times hosts a great article on this new technology and pays reference to David being one of the pioneers employing it in an epic feature film.

It has some sample screen shots and definitely convinces me, that David can accomplish all of the aging effects necessary for the film -- and do so in a very stunning, very realistic way!

THE MUSIC VIDEO BASE
Wow, this one might easily be the winner in any low-tech competition: The Music Video Base, mvbase.com. But hey, it's not about fluffy-puffy flash-intros, boasting design and effects, or is it?

mvdbase.com claims to be the ultimate site for music videos. And while they don't host any clips ... (too bad! -- Would have been "amusing", to say the least, to see how the low-techers handle plug-ins and traffic!) ... the site does provide an impressive list of David's music video accomplishments -- 51 in all their awesomeness!

What makes this list worth mentioning is that it features some additional infos, such as awards and trivia.

WIKIPEDIA
Interestingly enough the list at Wikipedia contains even more credits (I believe around 54; e.g. the 1987 video for Wire Train's "She comes on"). So it should be really interesting to get a definite list of ALL the works he's done ...!

David Fincher at GeekMonthly

UPDATED 10/24/2007 Thanks to Andrej for the new URL!

GeekMonthly caught David during a break from shooting his latest "The Curios Case of Benjamin Button", which we all expect to be nothing short of a masterpiece.

The article is a little bit of everything: Some bio, some interview tid-bits, and something of a portrait of who David is as a person. In his own home. If he ever gets to be there, that is ...!

It includes some interesting trivia on the techniques and visual effects challenges on shooting "Benjamin Button", David's favorite PS3 game (it's "Madden" -- hey, how about chunking that one into a movie, David?), and, my favorite in this one, the following statement:

'It was Freeman, actually, who approached Fincher about bringing sci-fi scribe Arthur C. Clarke’s “Rendezvous with Rama” to the screen, though, so far, that hasn’t happened. “We never got a script, and, at the time, the amount of CG work that he wanted to do would have cost way too much money,” Fincher explains. “But certainly, if we can solve the problems that we need to in ‘Benjamin Button,’ ‘Rama’ will be this much closer to being doable.”'

Okay, I'm not trying to get anybody's hopes up, including myself. But that does sound like Fincher is still bringing "Rendezvous with Rama" to the silver-screen! And, wow, would we love that ...!

However. Since this is no place for idle speculation, head on over to the Geeks and enjoy their article in the meantime:

David Fincher Interview, Film Comment (1999)

I totally agree with this one: Old potatoe chips and rancid milk should never be touched. However, this same statement holds completely untrue for interesting interviews with our favorite director ...

On an Edward Norton Fanpage (www.edward-norton.org) I found this highly entertaining and insightful interview titled "Gavin Smith goes one-on-one with David Fincher". It looks as if this has been published in FILM COMMENT magazine back in 1999, along the lines of the release of FIGHT CLUB.

My personal favorite part is David discussing how he decides on the films he wants to make. And he sums it up rather simply: "You are always looking for that one pervert story."

Amazing, isn't it ...! -- Check it out here:

The release of "ZODIAC" comes in stride with a good dozen of brand-new Fincher interviews. Each one of these has a some definite moments that are worth checking out and help to give a round-up picture of who David Fincher is; sort of like the pains and joys of an strictly ambitious Hollywood director!
