Time for the fincherfanatic blog there is no more -- enthusiasm for Fincher's work and craft will certainly remain...

I am deeply thankful for you wonderful bunch of fincherfanatics that have assembled here over the years, thank you for all of your emails, sharing your links and resources, and once again: a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Fincher himself for allowing me to meet him for a very generous interviews a few years back. Fincher's works have been great subjects of study for my own story-telling and film-making efforts. Creating and maintaining this blog for some years was an instructive and very very fun thing to do.

I saw the menu has crashed a while back and I have now created a most basic menu and have deleted all other menu items except the search function, which may come in handy to someone at some point.

That being said, there will be no more updates to this blog. I saw Daryl has set-up a new Fincher blog over at https://thefincheranalyst.com/, which I hereby highly recommend, and I will make sure to drop by there in the future.

Daryl, good luck with that, and thank you for carrying the torch.

To everyone else, thanks for stopping by and sticking around.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-88441109853579750902015-10-14T08:40:00.000-07:002015-10-14T10:54:07.726-07:00Side by Side: The Girls With The Dragon TattoosFandor set out to "compare a Scandinavian hit movie and its Hollywood remake". Which is of course misleading insofar as I am dead-certain Fincher has not for a moment set out to "remake" Niels Arden Oplev's movie, but was plainly interested in creating his own adaptation of the novel. Nit-picking much there? Meh, possible. And regardless, I do think this is a splendid idea: to analyse how two filmmakers approach and cineastically reiterate the same source material. I liked the swedish films a lot, yet overall I am more inclined towards Fincher's adaptation. Prolly not the biggest of surprises...

What adds to the spice of this comment is the fact that Ellroy and Fincher are currently developing a show for HBO together. What adds to my intrigue with the criticism is the fact that I generally love Fincher's films precisely for their performances. Similar criticism about the supposed stiltedness of performances was raised just recently by a few critics of "Gone Girl". Once again, I cannot really follow, as to me performances in Fincher films stand out for their richness in texture and nuanced moments.

What do you guys think?

Funny thing is, Rosamund is exceptionally quiet about how much Fincher tweaked the scene, which shall furtheron only ever be referred to as "THAT scene". But well, I am pretty sure Fincher had every angle of it already figured out... And I also notice now that I can never look at Pike in the same way... She freaks me out now...

Life's unfair, innit?

For all of the above, here's a little fix for the cravings: Hello Wizard has created a fantastic tableau of the cinematic greatness of more than two Fincher decades. Enjoy!

The story wore thin quickly, not for lack of substance, certainly neither for lack of trying, but simply for lack of finding any further substantial clues to verify Fincher's involvement in that one commercial singled out by Kubrick.

Quoth Kubrick: "Last year Michelob did a series, just impressions of people having a good time. (...) And the editing, the photography, was some of the most brilliant work I've ever seen. Forget what they're doing -- selling beer -- and it's visual poetry. Incredible eight-frame cuts. And you realize that in thirty seconds they've created an impression of something rather complex. If you could ever tell a story, something with some content, using that kind of visual poetry, you could handle vastly more complex and subtle material."

Like Fight Club? The Social Network?

David Fincher's first feature-length director's credit is given for the music documentary "The Beat of the Live Drum" in 1985, also having had directed several videos for rock icon Rick Springfield by that time. Now while I can indeed verify that David Fincher has directed a Michelob commercial, I can only suggest a heap of circumstancial clues: such as that Rick Springfield held close ties to Michelob at the time, Fincher's subsequent work as a beverages mastermind, and how distinctly the ad in question looks like a Fincher effort. All of this could mean that a young Fincher directed "The Night Belongs To Michelob" -- the clip mentioned and complimented on by Stanley Kubrick.

Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly begins his personal Fincher narrative from a different vantage point, Aerosmith's "Janie's Got A Gun", and goes on to craft a quite unique blend of personal comment, film review and film comparison, identifying key similarity in Kubrick's final film "Eyes Wide Shut" and Fincher's newly unboxed "Gone Girl".

Was all of this Kubrick / Fincher / Michelob quibble a bit confusing? Well, consider it a "brilliantly woven structure" for this post; it's my tribute to Gillian Flynn. Somehow it seemed to make sense and it seemed quite fitting also with Kelly's meandering explorations -- and the only way to share that 'Schroedinger's maybe' of Kubrick recognizing Fincher.

Do go on and read "A Study of Psychopathy in the Heteronormative Patriarchal Occult" though, it certainly is quizzically intriquing and one of the more extraordinary reviews for "Gone Girl" you will find out there. And while you're at it: Please join me in saying thanks to Mark for that amazing Kubrick find, and Gould for the Kelly piece -- Thanks guys!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-48792286726193576472014-10-05T23:35:00.001-07:002014-10-05T23:35:56.643-07:00DP/30: Rosamund PikeUnknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-62801426536567271312014-10-02T02:05:00.001-07:002014-10-02T02:05:13.902-07:00...And The Other Way Is Wrong
David Fincher - And the Other Way is Wrong from Tony Zhou on Vimeo.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-26211840711722377082014-10-02T01:59:00.000-07:002014-10-02T03:22:54.019-07:00Married Alive: "Gone Girl" ReviewCould not resist: All credit to Xan Brooks (The Guardian) for his most excellent phrase "married alive" to describe this movie.

Unsparing, ambiguous and impalpable is that new David Fincher thriller "Gone Girl": With Amazing Amy's mysterious disappearance on the morning of her fifth wedding anniversary, possibly violently abducted, her husband Nick Dunne quickly becomes local authority's prime suspect. No matter how classic a crime exposition about a missing woman this starts out as, the narrative loomingly twists and turns into a veritably unnerving psycho-thriller.

Beautiful Amy (Rosamund Pike) has always been a celebrity: Posing as her parents' source of inspiration from an early age, she was and always will be beloved Amazing Amy, the star of a series of children's books. In real life, Amy struggles as a writer, as does her husband Nick, and with a disease in Nick's family, the ivy-league New York couple decides to move to rural North Carthage, Missouri. Amy's disappearance — on the very morning of their anniversary no less — suggests Nick as a prime suspect. And no matter how much he insists on his innocence, he proves equally misleading and suspicious. The police finds evidence of Nick's luxury purchases financed by Amy's savings, significant credit card debt, a substantial life insurance to Amy's name. An incriminating diary appears the final nail in Nick's coffin: "This man of mine may truly kill me", Amy's blatant own words. Surprisingly Nick lawyers up and takes the offensive: Trying to persuade the police and the public of his innocence.

The film's feintish screenplay was crafted by writer Gillian Flynn, based on her own 2012 bestselling novel. David Fincher, meanwhile — director of Se7en, Zodiac and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo — long ranks as a virtuoso of his trade, among a handful of directors with such impeccable command of the full scope of cinematic narrative, masterfully juggling an inventive composition of comedy, crime thriller and satire for an enthralling, non-relenting two-and-a-half hours. A rightful, long-standing candidate for a Best Director Academy Award — who never ends up taking the trophy. The reason for this may just lie in Fincher's instinct for telling stories with dark appeal and hypnotic pace, films that are provocative and unconventional, yet manage with A-list casting and mesmerizing craft to remain barely within the spectrum of the cinematic mainstream. Gone Girl stands as Fincher's latest prime example of just this exceptional sensibility.

"I was interested in the material because I loved Gillian's idea of narcissism, and narcissism in attraction," Fincher reveals in one of many great interviews preceding the film's release. "The idea that a person feels they're deserving of a certain type of spouse, and the degree to which people will build a façade in order to ensnare another person who's own façade seems like it's compatible. I liked how spouses find that, after three, four, five years, they get exhausted keeping up their end of the delusion." It is this, beyond the thrills of a well-told procedural drama, that makes Gone Girl an inconvenient, terrifying film, so vividly and elegantly rendered, yet revealing, haunting, and shockingly brutal.

Once more Fincher magnetically aligns the talent of his cast and crew to deliver a masterpiece, sure to rank highly in the eyes of his fans. Fincher likes films that scar? Well, then Gone Girl could be Fincher's very own "Jaws" — adapted for marriages.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-44731204410606830172014-10-01T02:17:00.001-07:002014-10-01T02:17:26.244-07:00New "Gone Girl" AppetizerUnknownnoreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-52876124167766003542014-09-30T00:31:00.001-07:002014-09-30T00:33:39.481-07:00Fincher's UtopiaSo, "Gone Girl" should be coming to a cinema near you and stick around for a couple of weeks. Make sure to stock up on tickets and watch it as often as you can -- new Fincher material after that is expected as late as 2016. As Collider just reports, Fincher will dedicate all of 2015 to his re-imagining of Channel4's subversive conspiracy thriller "Utopia", and direct every episode of the show's first season. Dream come true!

We know the shades of dark that Fincher is capable of. If you haven't read Gillian Flynn's novel before watching "Gone Girl", well, make sure to expect that she can match Fincher's level of perverse-humored sinister and gut-wrenching satire. With all the original "Utopia" mini-series has to offer, and what these two will bring in addition, it sure sounds like this will be a helluva treat.

Long wait... but great news:

No, you know what: Actually Fincher's bad — with so much output and Gone Girl frenzy, there's just too many links out there to keep up. Not that we're ever complaining...

So thank you all you hard working commentators and link-droppers. This is amazing, I love the buzz and cannot wait for October 2nd. Damn right, Germany'll do this thing a day early, and then I'll spoiler the living shit out of you people. Joking. Or am I.

Here, speaking of spoilers: If you haven't actually seen the second season yet, trust me, you reeeally might not wanna watch that second video below.

For these links now, thanks Gould, thanks for keeping busy and being patient with me.
