Here is how ~

In the 'Promotion' archive menu screen go down as far as you can and then press left and a red 'Vanger Industries Archives' stamp should appear. Press enter and the 'Mondo Mondino' featurette will play, showing a promo photo shoot with Rooney Mara and Jean-Baptiste Mondino from September 2011.

In the 'Character' archive, in the 'Martin Vanger' section, go to the 'Torture' sub-section, press the right arrow key and a white 'VIA' stamp will appear. Press enter and the 'Gunplay' featurette will play, showing Fincher and Mara playing with guns.

In the 'On Location' archive, in the 'Hollywood' section, go to the 'Rape/Revenge' sub-section, press right and another white stamp will appear. Press enter and you will see a short stills gallery of 3 images - a Stockholm Youth Services court document confirming Bjurman's legal dominion over Salander, the STD questionairre he recites in the movie, and the hand-written cheque to pay for her computer.

I watched my favourite supplements again over the weekend. This disc just gets better each time. David Prior really gets some great material out of his interviews with all involved. They really seem to trust him and open up in a way that you just didn't get from the round of promo stuff in December. Particularly true of Rooney Mara.

And a new favourite Fincher quote ~ "People are perverts...that's pretty much been the basis of my career anyway."

For those of a technical persuasion the best section is definitely 'In the Cutting Room'. Angus Wall gives a superlative analysis of Fincher's very particular technique. He assesses that one of the reasons Fincher loves the Red camera is it's massively increased frame size, thereby allowing Fincher to crop out the central 2.40 image and have complete stabilization, or tilt faster, etc. Wall says that 99% of movies have at least some frame drift or slight movement, even on supposedly static shots. Fincher hates that and only wants the frame to be completely stable. The Red allows him complete control. Wall says this is the most stable movie he's ever seen, and it really does affect the viewing experience, even if you don't know why. He's right.Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01137995681672132519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-61725503306680962562012-03-17T01:51:52.996-07:002012-03-17T01:51:52.996-07:002 small trailers from the bluray disc on Casting B...2 small trailers from the bluray disc on Casting Blomkvist and Casting Salander below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajfzQjmwz-w&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XBP6Teyv7WY

and here is review of the bluray from high def digest.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/6451/girl_tattoo_2011.htmlRobert Paulsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-49006666108240938192012-03-16T10:23:09.649-07:002012-03-16T10:23:09.649-07:00Thanks for the in-depth review Simon. Fir...He he... Well I played The Game last night ;)

First. I always forget how well choreographed is this movie... some camera moves/shots are insane :) It's such a pleasure to watch. And the movie doesn't feel 15 years old at all! When it gets the HD treatment that it deserves, it will look amazing!!! Second. Michael Douglas owns this movie, he deserves more praise. One of his best roles, no doubt.

I love this movie more with each viewing :)mikeznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-19919946301593380122012-03-15T12:08:18.909-07:002012-03-15T12:08:18.909-07:00Damn, don't get me started! I loved the scene when Nicholas finds all the pictures and drugs and stuff... oh man :) And all the chase scenes with him and Christine, and the elevator stuff - so funny :) I think I'm going to watch it tonight again :)mikeznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-39944419495400804362012-03-15T08:56:46.946-07:002012-03-15T08:56:46.946-07:00Thanks jeff. I was enjoying re-living it so much!

While I'm here this is a non-GDT article that I came across today. It's a piece by Mike D'Angelo of AVClub that could best be described as a rave review/analysis of Fincher's 'The Game'. I can't actually remember whether I bought it at the time; I've definitely never heard the commentary - I would have remembered that! I may have got it and left it in the 'play soon' pile.
I shall definitely get the blu-ray though. Your patience will be rewarded; it's completely worth the wait.

Here is the response to my review that I received from David Prior on the Home Theater Forum, with an explanation about my 'quibbles' ~

"Wow, thank you for those very kind words. It's really an honor that you put so much time and thought into it, and enjoyed the disc as much as you did.

As for your quibbles, allow me to say I share them: it was frankly devastating that I wasn't able to include any material on the score and the sound design, which I normally obsess over. Sound is equally important as picture if you asked me, and I'm a life-long film score fanatic, so it was not oversight that kept those subjects off the disc, but rather factors outside my control. In brief, the film had a very rushed post-production schedule trying to hit that December release date and it precluded any serious participation from those artists most heavily involved in post, i.e.: sound design, score and color correction. I know Ren Klyce was working round the clock for weeks on end to hit the delivery, and I pestered Trent and Atticus numerous times to no avail. I have no doubt they wanted to participate, but with my disc delivery date coming so close on the heels of the film's delivery date, it just wasn't possible. It's frustrating, but sometimes that's the way it goes. I miss the old days when you had a good six month window, but those days are gone, alas.

I just wanted you to know I share your disappointment, but I'm glad the rest of it struck the right chord with you.

Thanks again, and cheers,

David"Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01137995681672132519noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7842104168403310590.post-68741810857452060662012-03-14T05:27:19.110-07:002012-03-14T05:27:19.110-07:00Very cool review Simon!
